Attorney Mariela Sagastume has been practicing immigration law since 2008 in the state of Colorado and has done an extraordinary job helping others throughout our community. She is a very proud Guatemalan, who has experienced firsthand the effects of immigration in her own family. It is this knowledge that I believe has helped her achieve her goals in life and fueled her determination to make a difference in our community. She understands completely the struggles our community often faces.
Since the beginning of her career in Denver, Ms. Sagastume has been a constant volunteer in several community events throughout the area. Ms. Sagastume continues to make a difference in the Latino community by offering her services at little or no cost to individuals.
She has volunteered in several Legal Nights, providing legal advice to people seeking answers to their immigration questions. Among some of the places where she has volunteered include, Mi Casa, Rocky Mountain Immigrant Advocacy Network, Centro San Juan Diego, and recently participating in the Jornada Migratoria, sponsored by the Guatemalan Consulate in Denver.
Ms. Sagastume is a great mentor and role model not only for Latina women but for Latinos in general. She had her mind set on one day opening an office where she would be able to provide her community with good legal advice for a reasonable price in their own language. She worked for several attorneys in the Denver metro area before deciding it was time to open her own firm. Less than two years later, she founded Ayuda Law Firm, LLC. Ms. Sagastume has worked diligently to build her reputation in our community, helping better the lives of immigrants by providing them services to achieve their American Dream just as she did.
Today, Ms. Sagastume is the Principal Attorney at Ayuda Law Firm, LLC, which employs four other Latina women. The firm has earned prestige in the Denver community, all due to Ms. Sagastume's determination, willingness and most importantly, faithfulness to her community and her Latina roots. It is a great honor to nominate Ms. Mariela Sagastume for the Community Hero Award.
