An Alabama woman was killed and a Florida man is in critical condition at an El Paso hospital after a rollover at Interstate 10 East and Horizon Boulevard on Saturday.
The woman, 32, is from Columbiana, Ala., and the man, 24, is from Silver Springs, Fla., deputies said.
The accident occurred just after 8:30 a.m. when the woman lost control of a sport utility vehicle and it crashed, according to the Texas Department of Public Safety.
Elizabeth Barney, a spokeswoman for the DPS, said the impact of the crash caused the man and the woman to be thrown from the SUV.
The crash caused law enforcement officers to shut down I-10 East at Americas Avenue to I-10 East and Horizon, causing a backup along the interstate and part of Gateway East.
Officials have not released the names of the victims because DPS troopers were trying to notify their relatives, authorities said.
Speed might have contributed to the accident, Barney said.
It was is the fifth vehicle accident that resulted in serious injury or death last week.
