Police and firefighters cleared an East El Paso middle school this morning after a suspicious package turned out to be an item left out of place.

Spc. Rafael Hernando Middle School opened on time after it was cleared by the El Paso Police Department, Socorro Independent School District Police Department and El Paso Fire Department, an SISD spokesman said.

School custodians found the item out of place and took the precaution to report it to authorities at about 5:34 a.m., district spokesman Daniel Escobar said.

The district sent a call to parents of Hernando Middle School and nearby Ituarte Elementary School to let them know about the incident, Escobar said.
