A man shot and killed himself when El Paso police detectives went to arrest him on a sex-abuse warrant early Wednesday at a Lower Valley apartment complex, a police spokesman said.

A police spokesman said David Carpio, 36, killed himself when police went to arrest him. Carpio was sought on suspicion of a charge of continuous sexual abuse of a child.

Shortly after 2 a.m., detectives from the Crimes Against Children Section were serving search and arrest warrants at Carpio's home at the San Marcos apartments, 921 N. Zaragoza, police said. Detectives were walking into his apartment when they heard a gunshot. Detectives pulled back and called for crisis negotiators and the SWAT team. Carpio was found dead when the SWAT team entered the apartment.
