It was a mixed bag of success for boys high school basketball teams in the area round of the state playoffs on Friday night.
Bel Air, Burges, Fabens, Tornillo and El Paso Harmony advanced to the regional quarterfinals, while Montwood, Coronado, Bowie, Andress, Hanks and Cathedral were all eliminated.
"It was a great game and we showed a lot of heart," Bel Air coach Rob Dibler said.
The game was tied at 45 after regulation.
In the fourth overtime, Kevin Vicencio and Aashir Sohail hit key free throws to ice the victory.
Josh Gallegos led Bel Air (26-5) with 24 points.
The Highlanders advance to the regional quarterfinals to meet Arlington Martin on Tuesday.
Hayden Davis led the Rams (27-6) with 15 points, while Tony Davis had 13.
"We played really well and had a chance to win," Rams coach Tony Harper said. "I couldn't have asked for a better effort from our team."
Alvin Jones led the Mustangs (20-12) with 32 points. Burges will meet Amarillo in the regional quarterfinals next week at a time, date and location to be determined.
Aaron Jones hardly played in the first three quarters due to foul trouble, but was able to score 12 of his 18 points in the final quarter.
"We played really well and came up big in the fourth quarter," Burges coach Paul Gutierrez said. "The game was close throughout and everyone contributed to this win in some way."
The Eagles (21-10) led 43-33 after three quarters.
"You have to give credit to Frenship, they got aggressive on offense in the fourth quarter," Andress coach Jim Forbes said.
Eddie Sinegal led Andress with 16 points, while Jeffrey Long had 13.
The Bears (20-12) were in the game early, but Amarillo pulled away to advance.
"Amarillo shot the ball really well," Bears coach Daniel Celaya said. "We played hard and gave it our best. The team really achieved a lot this year."
Jesse Lopez led the Bears with 10 points.
Patrick Zubia led the way with 32 points, while Jaime Portillo had 20.
Fabens (21-10) will play Midland Greenwood in the regional quarterfinals next week at a time, date and location to be determined.
The Coyotes (28-6) won their first-ever area round game, according to coach Cody Burris.
Sammy Sanchez led Tornillo with 25 points, while Irvin Bosquez had 11.
Tornillo will play Jim Ned in the regional quarterfinals next week at a time, date and location to be determined.
Ivan Gutierrez led the way with 27 points, while Bryan Urrutia had 20.
Harmony (24-3) will play Farwell in the regional quarterfinals next week at a time, date and location to be determined.
Aaron Partida led the Fighting Irish (12-23) with 13 points.
"We have a young team and we made progress this year," Cathedral coach Omar Duran said. "John Paul is a very good team and they really shot the ball well against us."
