Standley Lake High School

The discovery of four guns on school property forced heightened security at a Jefferson County high school Wednesday afternoon.

The incident began when a shotgun and a rifle were found at about 12:50 p.m. by a campus supervisor between two sheds on the athletic fields of Standley Lake High School.

The school was put on lockout Wednesday afternoon as a safety precaution. Classes continued on schedule but "no one is allowed in or out" during the lockout, Westminster police said in a Twitter release.

Police, using dogs, combed other areas of the campus as a precaution.

During the search, Westminster police discovered that a home in the 9000 block of West 103rd Avenue, had been broken into. The back of the house shares a fence with school property. Officers found two additional rifles that had been tossed over the fence onto school property. Several other items taken from the home were found scattered around the area.

Police ask parents of students to talk with their children about the incident and anyone with information on the guns should call investigators at 303 210-4519.
