Three alleged burglars were caught after an alert neighbor called police, who shot at the fleeing sport utility vehicle Thursday afternoon, which then crashed and the three suspects tried to run away.
None of the suspects were hit by the gunfire, Castle Rock police spokeswoman Caroline Kipp said. Their names and ages were not immediately released.
The incident started at about 1 p.m. in the 500 block of Mango Drive, when a neighbor heard unusual noises and, eventually, screeching tires, Kipp said.
As police arrived, they saw an approaching blue Ford Explorer, which the neighbor had described.
The SUV swerved at the officer, but missed and ran off the side of the road. At least one officer fired at the Explorer, and the three occupants jumped out and ran, Kipp said.
One was caught immediately and the two others were also soon in custody.
Based on the neighbor's account, police initially thought there were four alleged burglars, so roads are closed and D.C. Oakes High School was put on lockdown.
"But based on some investigation and looking at the tracks in the snow, we're confident there were only three suspects, and they are in custody," Kipp said.
