DENVER—The state of Colorado has paid more than $34,000 to private law firms to defend Secretary of State Scott Gessler against an ethics complaint that he misused public funds.
The Fort Collins Coloradoan ( http://noconow.co/128zFDJ) reports that the three lawyers from separate firms representing Gessler are collectively charging the state a discounted rate of $190 an hour and also billing for work by their paralegals.
Gessler believes the investigation of complaints he misspent state funds on political activities are unjustified and politically motivated.
The complaint was brought by Colorado Ethics Watch.
