A groundbreaking ceremony will be held Friday for the the last segment of the 10.5-mile I-225 rail line extension that will one day serve the Anschutz Medical Campus in Aurora.

The 10 a.m. event is planned at future Regional Transportation District City Center Station — currently the Centrepoint and Sable Transfer Station at 14575 E. Centrepoint Drive in Aurora.

RTD officials, along with Aurora mayor Steve Hogan, Colorado National Guard Maj. Gen. H. Michael Edwards, University of Colorado President Bruce Benson and Craig Briggs, the district manager for Kiewit Infrastructure Co. are expected to attend

Kiewit formed a public private partnership with RTD to fully fund the $600 million rail line.

The light rail extension will travel through Aurora and a small section of Denver. The line, which will include eight stations, will connect the existing Southeast Light Rail Line at the Nine Mile Station and the planned East Rail Line at the Peoria/Smith Station.

A key segment of the line will stop near the Anschutz campus, which includes a new VA hospital serving 60,000 military veterans and families.

The project is scheduled to be finished by November 2015.
