A husband and wife led deputies on an I-70 chase late Wednesday night, throwing items out of their vehicle windows in an attempt to elude pursuers, according to the Jefferson County Sheriff's Office.
The pair were eventually caught and jailed, the sheriff's office said in a media release.
The incident started at about 11:30 p.m. when a man called 911 reporting that the driver of an SUV had pointed a gun at him in traffic on I-70 near Ward Road.
The complainant told dispatchers that a sedan, driven by a woman, appeared to be traveling with the SUV.
The suspect SUV and sedan got off I-70 at Denver West Parkway and went into a business park, the release said.
Deputies caught up with the vehicles and when they tried to contact the drivers both of the vehicles took off, the sheriff's office said.
The drivers fled on I-70 westbound and threw things out the windows in an apparent attempt to slow pursuit, the release said.
The sedan collided with a patrol car near the Morrison exit. It came to a stop when a deputy used a patrol car to pin the sedan against a highway guardrail.
The SUV quickly pulled up and the sedan's driver, a woman, climbed out of her window and scrambled into the SUV through one of its windows. The SUV sped away and more items were thrown from it as deputies pursued.
The SUV exited at Lookout Mountain and became stuck in the snow in a residential driveway. The pair, a man and woman, bolted from the SUV but were caught a short time later.
They reported minor injuries and were taken to a local hospital.
At the hospital the man tried to escape but the attempt was foiled.
The sheriff's office identified the pair as a married couple, Michael Hutchens and Sierra Hutchens, both 22.
They were arrested and booked at the Jefferson County Jail on suspicion of numerous crimes.
Michael Hutchens is suspected of felony menacing, felony eluding and attempted escape, the sheriff's office said. Sierra was held on suspicion of assault of a peace officer and felony eluding.
The highway was shut down for a couple of hours by the incident and its investigation.
