A 5-month-old baby who was abandoned Monday night at a house in Greeley was returned to his mother unharmed, and the boy's father has been arrested, according to the Greeley Police Department.
"This whole situation stemmed from an argument between mom and dad about 7 o'clock last night," Greeley Police spokeswoman Sgt. Susan West said Tuesday.
West said the baby's father, Alvin Padilla, and mother, Audriana Lopez-Barnhart, were arguing about the custody of their child when Padilla allegedly slapped Lopez-Barnhart and took the child.
Lopez-Barnhart pursued Padilla in her car and then on foot but returned home when she could no longer keep up with him, West said.
"(Mom) didn't realize that dad had left his baby with someone else," West said.
Padilla, believing Lopez-Barnhart called the police, left his child with a woman he had never met or seen before in the 1900 block of 12th Avenue. The woman then called the police, and the baby was taken to the hospital.
The baby was released to Lopez-Barnhart Tuesday morning unharmed.
Padilla was charged with child abuse, harassment and breaking a restraining order Lopez-Barnhart had against him, West said.
