Douglas County police resorted to calling in the SWAT team Friday afternoon after a suicidal man with a shotgun refused to comply with requests to put down the gun.
Negotiations went on futilely for several hours before the suspect shot himself. He was immediately taken to the hospital. He was in critical condition as of 7 p.m.
No other shots were fired.
Police responded to a call at the 9000 Block of Windhaven Drive in Parker at 12:28 p.m. that a man was armed and suicidal.
After securing a perimeter and unsuccessfully getting the suspect to surrender, negotiators and regional SWAT teams arrived, said Sergeant Ron Hanavan, spokesperson for Douglas County police.
Hanavan said in a release that, due to the circumstances, Douglas police have presently deferred the investigation to the 18th Judicial Critical Response Team, which is made up of the 18th District Attorney's Office and Law Enforcement Agencies within the 18th Judicial District.
